Four Seasons Mexico City Review: A Luxe Urban Oasis in the Heart of the Capital
We stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel in Mexico City for a four-night, long weekend getaway for my birthday this past August. This hotel is nothing short of spectacular, although I feel as though we are always landing a stay at a place that is either undergoing renovations or about to. As such, the photos of the room may not reflect what it looks like now, or a few months from now, as the rooms were undergoing major renovations while we were staying there. Apart from quite a bit of noise during the day, our stay here was near perfect.

The Location
The Four Seasons is located at the crossroads of several posh neighborhoods in Mexico City. Situated right off of La Reforma Avenue, your location is right by Chapultepec Park, as well as the high end neighborhoods of Condesa, Roma Norte and Polanco. From here, you can easily walk to several excellent museums, including the Anthropology Museum, the National History Museum, and The Museum of Modern Art, as well as the zoo within Chapultepec park. You’re also close enough to walk to amazing shopping and eating/drinking around the aforementioned neighborhoods. Getting to the historic center of CDMX or other neighborhoods such as Coyoacan will require an Uber or a private driver, and the Four Seasons will be happy to arrange any transportation needed for your trip. This location, though, is definitely prime for touring and eating!

I also have to note here that this hotel is an absolute island of tranquility among a very busy, overpopulated and polluted city. There are 10 Million plus souls in and around this city, and at 8,000 feet, with lots of pollution, the city can feel very stifling. The Four Seasons is a true oasis in the middle of it all, with a large, very green courtyard surrounded by the rooms, making you feel like you’re miles away from the crazy traffic and gobs of people just outside its walls. I would say that this feeling of calm is one of the primary reasons to stay here, since after a busy day of heavy touring, walking, eating, and drinking, you’ll want a peaceful place to chill out and lay your head for the evening.

The Amenities
There are lots of amenities here at the Four Seasons, and we used just about all of them. The primary amenity that we took advantage of is their concierge, and booking tours. The awesome thing about staying at a Four Seasons are their tours and guides, as they never disappoint. Four Seasons hires the absolute best people, and contracts with local, knowledgable experts for all of their tours. Even the tours that are basically just a ride to get to a different neighborhood features a driver who knows all about the history of the city, and can provide good tips for wherever you’re going. See below for more about the excursions we took while staying here.

The Four Seasons has a small pool and spa area on the third floor of the hotel. Luckily, it was right outside our room, so we had easy access to the lovely pool. I would say that the pool could use a bit of an update, as it is a bit old, but there were very comfortable loungers with shade, and amazing service by the pool as well. You can literally order anything here, either off the pool menu, or off the room service menu. We spent a chill afternoon here, just hanging out after a morning of walking around Chapultepec Park. We did not do any spa experiences as there wasn’t time, but they offer lots of services in private rooms near the pool area.

There is quite a large fitness area near the pool and spa, and it was never very crowded while were there. They have lots of amenities there such as fresh towels, water, and snacks.

Four Seasons has several boutique shops, including an art gallery and a jewelry shop that I enjoyed checking out. The jewelry shop was amazing, featuring beautiful pieces from local artists that weren’t exorbitantly priced. Brian purchased a stunning necklace inspired by Frida Kahlo for my birthday from the shop.

The hotel also features several bars and restaurants, which you can read about below.

The Activities and Excursions
We booked the “South of the City” tour, which was basically just a driver to take you down to the Coyoacan neighborhood. I did zero research for this trip overall, so luckily the driver was super knowledgable about what to do there, since I had no idea about anything beyond going to the Frida Kahlo Museum. I did book tickets to Casa Azul prior to our trip, but that’s all we had planned for the day, so we relied heavily on our driver for recommendations. He took us to an old, beautiful church to walk around, dropped us off at the Saturday Bazaar, and we made a few other stops including grabbing some amazing coffee at a local roastery. He also provided some recommendations and history about Casa Azul on our way to the museum, and we wouldn’t have even noticed Frida’s urn and ashes if he didn’t tell us what it looked like and where it was, since it was very inconspicuous within the museum. Check out my tips on Casa Azul here!

We also did a food tour while staying here. Note that the “Food, Glorious Food” tour and the “Hidden Gems: Bars and Tacos” are essentially the same tour when I asked the concierge. Our guide Gaby took us to authentic cantinas, Michelin-rated taco bars, and a mix of high-end and locals-only bars, easily sweeping us past the lines outside since she seemingly knows everyone in this town.

You’re definitely paying for access on these tours, and Gaby was a true delight. We had incredible tacos, out of this world mezcal, and top-notch churros to cap off the tour late at night. She even knew the mariachi band at the cantina we visited, and asked them to play me a song for my birthday! I would highly recommend booking this tour while staying at Four Seasons.

The Restaurants and Bars
The Four Seasons boasts several restaurants and an exceptional bar on the property. We tried Zanaya for breakfast and dinner, and the Fifty Mils bar for cocktails. The other restaurants are a Japanese Omakase restaurant called Oma, and an Italian restaurant called Il Becco. I like to stick to local flavors when traveling so we skipped the Japanese and Italian joints in favor of the Mexican flavors at Zanaya.

Fifty Mils has incredible and fun hand crafted cocktails as well as light bites, situated in the courtyard of the hotel. It’s got an awesome drinks-on-the-terrace vibe, and the cocktails are unique and dramatic.

Breakfast at Zanaya is buffet-style, and much like the epic buffet we experienced at Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay, it was nearly impossible to choose what to eat. The buffet is extensive and features not only American breakfast items, but lots of local Mexican flavors as well. There’s fresh fruit, and lots of gluten as well as mimosas on offer.

Dinner at Zanaya was amazing as well. We opted for seafood including giant prawns and grilled octopus which were both fresh and delicious.

And, as a special treat, because it was my birthday, they brought out a complimentary chocolate cake. Four Seasons resorts really go out of their way to make you feel special and celebrated!

Finally, there’s an amazing bakery and coffee shop on the property called Pan Dulce. Oh my goodness, it is virtually impossible to walk by this place (which you have to do on your way to your room) and not grab a pastry and a delicious coffee. I highly recommend the papaya buttercream filled pastry. Yum!

The Room
We booked a deluxe room, which had a fourth night free special going on. The room was very big and super comfortable, with a king sized bed, and a solid sitting area with a love seat and a desk. I love that the Four Seasons always includes fresh flowers in the room!

The bed was extremely comfortable, and on my actual birthday, placed special shams on the bed wishing me a happy birthday!

The bathroom was quite large as well, but was starting to show its age. I hope that with the renovation they get rid of the large soaking tub and expand the shower.

There was plenty of storage and closet space, and the hallway featured a really nice minibar with a Nespresso coffee machine, some complimentary snacks, as well as snacks and alcohol for purchase.

At night, the room was super quiet, in spite of the fact that you are facing the courtyard, where there is live music some evenings. During the day, as mentioned, the renovations were loud, but we were alerted several times to this prior to our stay and during check-in. All in all, this was a solid, comfy room.

The Vibe
The vibe at Four Seasons Mexico City is very chic and refined, but not stuffy. The open-air courtyard adds whimsy and it’s truly an oasis from the outside world. The furnishings throughout the hotel, including the common spaces in and around the lobby, are high-end, and we enjoyed chilling out in these spaces before and after excursions.

Every single person who works here tries to learn your name and your preferences, and you’re always pleasantly greeted by anyone you may meet. Four Seasons service is unparalleled, and Mexico City is no exception.

The Recommendation
I would absolutely and without hesitation recommend staying at the Four Seasons Mexico City. Comparing this trip to our last visit to CDMS, where we stayed in the historic center of the city, I felt much more relaxed here. The location is exceptional for walking to different museums, restaurants and bars, and the excursions and tours are worth exploring. It was really tough to choose which excursions to try! The Four Seasons often has discounts, deals and offers here, so don’t forget to take advantage of those. Enjoy your stay in this vibrant city!
