La Capanna Del Gallo: An Unforgettable Tuscan Dinner

I’m so excited to share our experience at La Capanna Del Gallo in Tuscany, Italy, because it was easily one of the best meals we had on our entire trip to Italy. Not only was the food extraordinary, but the service was cheerful and easygoing (though not inattentive), and you can’t beat the sunset views here. La Capanna Del Gallo was recommended to us by the concierge at the Como Castello Del Nero where we were staying for three nights, and they also arranged roundtrip transportation to and from the restaurant for us.

We arrived super early – way before anyone else, and were seated even before service started. The massive wine list was offered and we dug in. We started with an appetizer platter which included a selection of meats and cheeses, as well pickled mushrooms, a tapenade, and traditional coccoli which may have been the best thing I ate on the whole trip.

We all ordered different main dishes, and I was super happy with my choice of pork-stuffed tortellini pasta with grapefruit butter and fermented plums. The pasta was fresh and hand-made, and the flavor was out of this world. Gosh, I do love it when the pasta itself has actual flavor.

Additional dishes were super local and traditional – Brian ordered the steak with a very generous slice of Colonnata lard. Eli got the squid ink risotto which was devoured almost more quickly than I could grab the photo, and Clara went for the Ricotta cheese gnocchi (the best kind) with bell pepper cream and mint. We all agreed this was easily one of the freshest and most flavorful meals of our trip. In fact, all of the flavor combinations sounded a bit weird, yet worked in harmony on the palette.

In between our mains and dessert, the sun started to set, and I’ll just leave this photo right here.

We all ordered a bunch of desserts, since the main meal was relatively light, in fact, we ordered every dessert on the menu that day except for one. Pictured here is the lime and pink pepper creme brulee and the housemade pastries.

Pictured below is the panna cotta and the cocoa sponge cake with marshmallow and banana gelato. Of course all of the desserts were super cute, and super delicious.

We also wanted to try some dessert wines, and rather than just bring us a basic Vin Santo, we were offered a special aged Vin Santo, as well as a Muffato from the Antinori estate, which is a dessert wine made much like Sauternes using botritis to its primary advantage. Yum!

La Capanna Del Gallo is a local place in Tuscany, and plenty of Italian was being spoken by the patrons here. I know that people come for the fresh and delicious pasta, extensive wine list, generous service, and exceptional views. You’ll want to come here for the same reasons. The highest recommendations possible for this lovely restaurant from ChiLuxe Travel, and when we revisit Tuscany, we’ll definitely be back! Cin cin!
